    Mike Klis
    16 May 2012 | 2:06 pm
The Broncos will soon join the parade of NFL teams who have been signing their draft picks. There really is no mystery with the contracts the seven drafted Broncos will receive. With the NFL salary cap set at the same $120.375 million figure in 2011, the draft salary pool for each team in 2012 is virtually the same as 2011. The difference is a $15,000 increase in the minimum rookie salary from $375,000 to $390,000. So give or take $15,000, a player can figure out the contract he will receive by looking at the player taken in his draft slot for last year. For instance, the Broncos’ top…

NEW YORK — As moviegoers over the weekend flocked to see Marvel’s new superhero ensemble, they would understandably associate the idea of Nazi-fighting avengers  with Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Black Widow. But, in fact, there was also a real-life band of Jewish freedom fighters with the same name who were bent on sticking it to Hitler’s henchmen. Let’s start with the new film. Without giving away anything, let’s just say it goes there. And, of course, Captain America was launched in 1941 with the iconic image of Captain America punching Hitler right in the face,…
  • Circumcision funding killed

    10 May 2012 | 11:25 am
A COMBINATION of fiscal conservatives, health professionals, and “intactivists” (people who oppose circumcision of newborn males for a variety of reasons) convinced the Colorado House Appropriations Committee last week to kill a bill that would have restored state Medicaid funding for circumcisions. The bill failed in the committee on May 4 by a vote of eight to four, putting an end to the move to restore funding for this year’s legislative session, which ended Wednesday, May 9, and likely for the foreseeable future, since its co-sponsor, ?Senator Joyce Foster (D-Denver), is now retired…
  • Second Amendment does not ban common sense

    10 May 2012 | 3:31 am
Even if we concede that the Second Amendment permits individuals, not only militias, to carry guns; even if we concede that it’s quite nice to have an armed person in the room if a “crazy” starts shooting (à la Columbine); even if we concede that members of the National Rifle Association have the same rights as other Americans to speak their piece and lobby as they see fit; the NRA is over the top. So over the top as to be an embarrassment to everyone but its own members.

In case you’re not familiar with Glassboard, here’s the deal: what Pair is to the bedroom, and Path is to the rec room, Glassboard is to the board room. (Hence “board” in the name. “Glass” refers to your phone’s screen.) This is the first explanation of the name that I’ve seen. The name always struck me as invoking exactly the wrong mental connections (glass = open, where GlassBoard’s major selling point = privacy).       I believe the term refreshment was born on warm day, uttered from the lips of a man who just gulped the first swig of a cold pint of beer. The carbonation swelled and burst, like music in perfect timing with the hops, a percussive symphony on his taste-buds and he thought, perfect. He searched for a word, a measure of his overwhelming joy. He felt reborn, but in the sensory respect. The word, like poetry unraveled from his mouth: refreshment. This was the day man first loved beer, at least, that’s how I picture the definition forming. The truth is that the term refreshment came…

If the CBS Story “DIA Construction Will Cause Parking Problems For Years” sounds like a cynical headline to you then consider yourself an urban optimist. Sure, car commuters are going to be inconvenienced with some traffic pains for the next few years. The goal isn’t to make the car travelers happy anyway. It’s to provide car free travel from the heart of Denver to Denver International Airport. These years of construction will contribute to what I consider a HUGE asset…

I love walking.  I love biking.  I love trains and light rail. I hate driving. So I was pleased as heck to see the New York Times Article “Denver is urged to hit the sidewalk“.  Can a walkable city be designed from the ground up? I prefer to think it can be encouraged through urban planning and, more importantly, making it painful to park and drive. I would rather see funds directed to public transportation, but that’s just my perspective. And please don’t get me started on our lame attempts to provide transportation relief to the mountains.   Guess what folks,…

    Ryan Park
    10 May 2012 | 12:25 pm
Last year, CU-Boulder was crowned #1 Top Party School in America for 2011, despite the school’s administrative efforts to tone down the party-school label. Surprisingly, CU-Boulder has done an excellent job at toning down that image over the past few years. Welp, that’s shot to sh*t. A video released yesterday by a company called I’m Schmacked shows CU-Boulder students partying like there is no tomorrow. America,I guess there is no denying the elevation. CU-Boulder remains the ultimate Rocky Mountain high.

  • LEAP a big step for teachers in DPS

    Julie Poppen
    16 May 2012 | 1:33 pm
Nick Childers’ 10th-graders at Denver’s West High School are studying  the causes of World War II. As the teens enter the classroom, he greets each by name, makes eye contact, and shakes their hands. West High School teacher Nick Childers talks to LEAP peer observer Marianne Kenney. On this spring day, however, there is an unexpected – or at least partially unexpected – guest. Marianne Kenney is one of Denver Public Schools’ 45 paid “peer observers.” She’s a former Cherry Creek teacher and passionate school reformer. She also helped write the state’s content standards…
  • The Odds aren’t good!

    Drew Litton
    16 May 2012 | 1:29 pm
The odds aren’t good. Simply put waiting for an NBA player to make a free throw is a bit like waiting for the Cubs to win the World Series. It just ain’t gonna happen. At least in our lifetimes. It reminds me of one of my favorite stories. Legendary basketball coach Don Haskins, all 250 plus pounds of him, had a player who apparently thought a bit highly of himself and didn’t find his deficiency at the free throw line to be that big of a deal. Haskins challenged him to a free throw contest and let the kid go first. The kid hit a couple out of 10 or so and proudly handed old…

  • Commentary: At graduation, a parent reflects

    16 May 2012 | 12:24 pm
A Elisa Cohen, North Denver parent, looks back on the long, winding path through a variety of schools and home-schooling to her daughter’s high school graduation. My baby graduates from high school tonight. What a long strange trip it’s been. From magnet to home-schooling to charter school to online high school to one neighborhood school and finally to this last one – South High – my kid has experienced all the educational opportunities the first decade of the century has to offer. In 1996 the magnet movement was in full swing. As I understand it, magnets were designed to lure…
